Kunisaki Stories

Short fiction for the gaps the sources leave

The Kunisaki Chronicle and Down the Rabbit Hole start from the ruins and the records and sort out thirteen centuries of Kunisaki. But records speak of institutions and temple halls; they do not say what the people who lived here ate in the morning, what they feared, or what they looked forward to.

Kunisaki Stories fills that silence with fiction. Each piece stands one unnamed person in one era and lets you see the world — its work, its rites, its certainties — through their eyes and hands.

Everything here is invented. Where the sources end and imagination begins is laid out in “The Materials” at the end of each piece. For the history itself, turn to the Chronicle and the Rabbit Hole.
